When a Black Queer Non-Binary barista/street medic who just moved back to their southern hometown realizes they’ve connected to an alternate version of themselves in another timeline, it brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “You’re just talking to yourself.”

Sometimes, we need to let our biracial community siblings know that they belong. It was an honor to be a resourceful ally on this film. Working with the Yellow Beanie Crew makes me want to continue bettering myself and how I live my life towards others. Really and truly.

A Gullah Geechee family gathers in South Carolina’s Lowcountry to reflect on Taylor Island, their Civil War–era heirs’ property. Sharing stories and hopes, they face cultural and legal challenges while envisioning opportunities for future generations.

No. They are not perfect. Yes, they have conflict. But in the four years I’ve been knowing this family—long enough to stop being polite and start “being real”—I’ve never seen them approach each other disrespectfully. They are going to get the victory and they will own their land. It seems insurmountable, until it’s not.

The most beautiful moment I had with the director and cinematographer, who were white men, was that we all knew we weren’t leaving until we got the family dinner shot. It was unspoken, respected and understood. Mr. Wright had been working all day so that his family could be at home. We had taillights right at 12 hours—ask me if you want me to explain that. But we were gonna get this Black Husband and Father breaking bread with his family. Period.
